Gift Wrap

I Love Gift Wrap.  I have more than any normal person needs.  If ever I wasn't having to use one of my bedrooms as a home office, I might be inclined to have a gift wrap/hobby room.  But right now I just have a gift wrap closet...a very small closet in my guest room.  Because it is very small and guests seem to expect to be able to hang up a piece or two of their clothes when they visit, I had to get it very organized.  Here is a photo tour...

Now, for the record, I always wrap a gift.  By wrapping a gift, I mean old school...boxes, paper, etc.  I hardly ever use a gift bag.  But there is the occasion when something is odd shaped and you might need to use a bag.  I had a great idea recently.  Let me show you...
This happens every single time!  Someone is so nosey and a photo hound.
Okay Lola, move out of the way and I'll take your photo...
Cute!

Now back to my idea...
This is a gift that I just wrapped for a friend's upcoming birthday.
They are selling these bags at Hobby Lobby now.  They are reusable shopping bags.
I got one a while back and love it, so when I had a larger/odd size gift to wrap, I thought
why not get a bag that is reusable.  They have this style, but probably about 5 other styles too.
Really, it isn't any more expensive than most gift bags, so I wanted to share my idea with you.

My Favorite Emmy Moments

It take a real major catastrophe to keep me from watching an award show (except all those Country Music ones that they seem to have every 6 weeks).  I know that everyone doesn't always watch.  My law partner, Jennifer, never watches.  I think she does that just to irritate me.

Anyway,  here are my favorite Emmy Moments (and P.S. I now have such a crush on Jimmy Fallon because he is so funny!)

The opening skit...

Two of My Favs: George Clooney and Modern Family

A Musical Tribute to 3 shows going off the air...

Now for the dresses....

Sure there were some pretty dresses, but there weren't any that I was over the moon with.  There were a few disappointments though...

It's not that this is bad, but doesn't she wear this same darn dress to everything?
Spice it up a little!

ick, ick, ick!
I had a strong dislike for January Jones' dress

and this falls under a total disappointment
I LOVE Lauren Graham and think she is so beautiful, but this was a total let down.

I'll be tuning in to Fashion Police tonight on E! to see if any of the dresses become a "I LOVE" dress...

Cupcakes, Shopping and Award Show...Oh My!

This weekend has been made up of several of my favorite things...cupcakes, shopping and award shows!

Let me recap...

I was never so happy to see a week come to an end as I was on Friday!  It wasn't that it was a particularly bad week, but it was just the longest week in history.  Hopefully this week I will be back in the swing of things and be used to leaving my house by 6:30 three morning a week.

On Friday, after I was done with school, court and some other work, I headed down to Dallas.  I had two rings that were being re-sized (seems my knuckles are bigger and my fingers fatter) and I went down to  pick those up.  While there, I made a run to Society Bakery.

I had been wanting to pay them a visit.  They've been voted best cupcakes in Dallas and some of the best in the country, so I thought I needed to give them a try.  I got 4 different ones and Jennifer and I sampled them all.
They aren't particularly pretty, but they were pretty good.  They still don't top J. Rae's from Fort Worth.

On Saturday, my Mom came to town for lunch and shopping.  Apparently my Dad told her he was sick of seeing her wear the same tops to all the dances they attend, and told her to go shopping.  After lunching at PF Changs, we hit up several stores and got her some cute new stuff.  I didn't get much... I got a skirt at Ann Taylor Loft for $4.88 and a sleep shirt/tank for $3 and change to match some sleep shorts I bought earlier this week.  I was a big spender!  My Mom bought me this adorable cupcake keyring that I had been waiting on Coach to bring to the outlet!
My Lola dog Coach keychain had broken earlier this year and I've been wanting this one as a replacement.

Today, I'm doing a whole lot of nothing to prepare for another busy week.  I'm watching One Tree Hill and then tonight Live from the Red Carpet and The Emmys.  You know I love an award show!

Thursday's Ramblings

I have nothing exciting to talk about, so here are a few ramblings going through my mind:

(1) I'm so darn glad it is Thursday, but really wish it were Friday.  I.  Am.  Exhausted!  Seriously exhausted.  First week back in school, it is always tough to get used to a new schedule.

(2) All of my classes are so different.  I always find it interesting.  My 7 a.m. class is made up of mostly high school kids.  They are scared little sheep.  They won't enter the classroom until I get there.  They huddle out in the hallway and wait on me.  I have told them that they can go inside.  I have told them that they give me a heart-attack at 6:50 every morning when I walk up and see them out there because I think the door is locked and I don't have a key!  We'll see if they make any progress tomorrow.

My 8 am class is tardy and 3/4 asleep.  That's all I know about them so far.  They're real dullards.

My Wednesday night class thinks I'm hilarious, but I'm sure I can bore their socks off soon enough.

(3) This weather is HEAVEN!  I'm sad that we are going to creep back into the 90's today, but even that will be 17 degrees cooler than Monday, so who can really complain.

(4) Speaking of weather, have I mentioned that Walmart isn't running their A/C?  I have gone twice in the last two weeks and it has been super hot in there.  I have asked why and was told that corporate won't let them run the A/C.  Huh?  I told them to pass along a message to corporate that Target runs the A/C and as long as it's hot, I'll be going there.  Sadly I haven't gotten the message to Target that they need to carry Lola's Hartz Chew Bones, so I have to keep going back to Walmart.

(5) I finished reading Jane Green's new book last night and it made me cry.  I don't like books that make me cry.

(6) Abby booked the rental car for one day of our trip to NOLA, soooooo now everything is officially set!

(7) One week until football starts!

(8) Dillards has all of it's sale stuff an additional 40% off starting Today!

Random Shop-a-thon

First I want to say that it is Tuesday night, school is in session, and I'm home for the 2nd night in a row!  I totally feel like I'm playing hookie from school!  I think I'm going to enjoy having 4 of the 5 nights during the work week at home again!

Today, I thought I'd pop by a couple of stores and look for a throw to lay over the arm of my sofa.  Lola likes to lay on the left arm of the couch when I am home, and it's getting some little snags.  I mention the "when I am home" part because she only does it when I am at home.  Period.  If she is alone, she lays on her adorable Anthropology bed.  She's an odd duck.

Anyway, I thought I could find a pretty throw to lay over the arm and solve my problem.  Sure I could make her stop laying on the arm of the couch, but I think we all know who rules the roost around here and that ain't happening.

Anyway, turns out that when you go into a store and ask if they have any throws within 24 hours of this...

...people tend to look at you like you've lost your mind!  I did greatly enjoy my trip to Hobby Lobby today.  In addition to a great selection of Halloween stuff, they have the Christmas ornaments and Christmas trees out, and most excitingly in my book...
Christmas Wrap!!!

Not their whole selection, but enough to make me excited!  I know that many of you are thinking, "Christmas in August! Why the rush?".  But to me, it was like a glimmer of hope in this August heat wave.  A reason to keep on livin'...cooler times are a comin'!

I never did find a dadgum throw, but I collected the most random assortment of stuff ever in the history of shopping trips...

Would you look at this adorable dish scrubbing brush.  Of course I got the pink one!
They came from Pier 1

Also from Pier 1, and from their clearance...

I got the small, blue tumbler for my bathroom (you know teeth-brushing/water cup)

Finally, the most bizarre purchase of all... Christmas wrapping paper.

I was able to hold off and not buy any at Hobby Lobby, because I knew they were still getting more in, but I ran across this at Tuesday Morning and COULD NOT pass it up!
Silver foil background, pink, lime green, zebra print, polka dots...I could go on and on about what all I love about this paper!

TV Junkie

Army Wives has a new and unexpected fan...

Back to School

Well, it's that time again... Back to School.  I cannot say that I'm entirely enthused about it either, though that is probably on account of only a week off between Summer School and Fall Semester starting up.  This semester, I'm teaching 3 classes again...Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays at 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. and then Wednesdays at 7-9:45 p.m.  Yep, Wednesdays are going to suck.  Big time.  I anticipate that I'll be mainlining caffeine from pre-sun-up to sun-down.

I had to share my favorite school photo of all time with you guys because I believe it reflects my attitude for today.
No, this isn't just some funny photo I found online, this is my friend Lisa's little boy, Tommy, 4 years ago when he was in Kindergarten.  He hated school and by darn wasn't about to fool anyone who might view his photo in the yearbook into thinking otherwise!  Love it!  It has lived on my refrigerator ever since because it cracks me up!

Reservations...check!

The excitement is building...  I just made all of our dinner, brunch, etc. reservations for the trip to NOLA next month.  I love that moment when you hang up with the very last restaurant...All the stress of "where am I going to eat" is over, the reservations are made and now all that's left is showing up and enjoying it!  I know most people don't fret over such things, but people, I'm serious about it.  I've got a spreadsheet for every single trip mapping out each and every meal!

I also enjoy making reservations for New Orleans because every single place I called said one or more of the following, "We look forward to having you back", "It'll be good to see ya' again darlin'", "Oh, Kara, I've got you here in the system...".  Now I know they don't know me from Adam, but they've got me in their smart little computers and it makes making reservations so darn easy.

So looking forward to K-Paul's, GW Fins, Commanders Palace, and more!

Otters

I got my Otterbox this week.

I'm pleased because it is not as big and bulky as I had anticipated.  Though it is basic black and not a cute color, I'm still happy to have it.  It is a relief to not feel like I'm toting around a faberge egg on a daily basis!

And in other otter news, it is less than a month until I go to New Orleans and get to go visit the Otters.  I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE otters and almost always go visit the Otters at the Aquarium.  I'm certain I'll drag Abby there to visit the adorable little creatures!

Melt in Your Mouth Goodness

Tonight I participated in Restaurant Week by going to III Forks.  I was also suppose to have gone to Stephen Pyles last night, but (a) I didn't love the RW menu they put out, and (b) was worried I might be too tired after staying out late Tuesday night (and boy was I!), so I cancelled that.

Tonight I had 4 courses that included:
Crawfish Beignets, III Forks Salad, Filet Mignon, and Berries Bread Pudding.
Yum-O!
(sorry~iphone photo)

My only complaint, if it can even be called that, is that the plates are so hot, they feel like they've been plucked directly from the sun.  Since I like my steak Cold Rare, it kind of continues to cook it a little.  I guess the bulk of the population probably doesn't have this issue, so it probably hasn't occurred to them.

But it was a really great meal and now I'm so sleepy, I can barely hold my eyes open.  I think tonight may be the second night in a row that I go to sleep before 10 p.m.!

Ryan Star Concert

I've been dying to post about this all day!  But I had to go to two courthouses this morning because I had a client with a felony and another with a misdemeanor, so it took a bit of time to deal with their issues, and then I had a client meeting this afternoon, so I'm just now getting around to blogging about last night.  Darn clients and court!  Don't they know I had loads of fun to blog about?

Last night  I went to see Ryan Star in concert in Dallas.  I coerced my friend Lisa into going with me.  I got her a copy of his new album, 11:59, so that she could be up on the music.  We started out the evening at Twisted Root Burgers because it was only a block from our venue down in Deep Ellum.  They give you a celebrity's name that they call out when your order is ready.  Lisa was Juno...

Then we went to get in line.  I was first in line (did you have any doubts) and very excited.  A storm started to kick up, so we were hopeful to get inside before it really started raining.  Turns out, the staff had me in the wrong line and Ryan was really playing their larger venue which was around the block.  So we hightailed it over there and got in line (not first anymore, but we were still able to get in before the rain started).

Of course I had attempted to smuggle in every camera I own after the April photo debacle!  Turns out smuggling wasn't necessary because this venue didn't care about cameras.  I experimented with different settings on my camera with the two bands that were on before Ryan.  Of course after photo number 1, I noticed that my battery power went from 2 out of 3 bars to 1 out of 3.  As soon as I saw that, I knew it would be just like a tank of gas...the first third goes way further than the last third!

On another note, I think Lisa's highlight of the whole show came during the first bands performance when they declared "Now we're going to get back to our roots and play a country song.".  She clapped and yelled.  It was at this point that I knew this Baptist bred, former majorette from Terrell, TX was about to be out of her element.  I know, I know.  You're thinking, pot meet kettle...You're from small town Texas too.  Yes, but I love a great rock show.  I have sat third row at a Nine Inch Nails show (ie:  nothing can scare me).  I also knew that this show might be a little different than the album that I gave her to listen to because they made the album a little less rock and a little more pop than what Ryan's shows actually end up being.

My fancy camera made it almost through the whole show without dying.  I am so pleased!  I got some great shots!  Here are several of my multitude of great pics...

At the end of all of Ryan's shows, he does a meet and greet with the crowd.  He is so gracious and signs CD's...

...and poses for photos.  I gave Lisa my point and shoot camera for a pic.  She got a horrendous close-up of my face and Ryan's right ear.  It was at this point, that I took the camera from her and gave it to some random guy standing there, whom unlike Lisa, I assumed was more comfortable using technology more advanced than a rotary dial phone.  I may have assumed too much... He took this slightly out of focus shot...
I was so fired up to tell Ryan two things at the meet and great and I got so distracted by the camera fiasco, that I forgot to tell him both things!  I was going to tell him that I became a greater fan when I saw that he mentioned his dogs in the dedication page of his new album (you know that totally won me over as fan for life) and also I was going to tell him that listening to his music got me through the crazy, kid screaming, pre-op for the repair of my severed finger earlier this summer.  I totally thought I was going to lose my mind that morning until I cranked up his tunes!

I also took several videos...problem is, I'm a complete idiot.  I turned my camera vertical (seemed like a good idea at the time) and now most of my videos are sideways.  I'm blonde...I don't know what else to say. Anyone know how to remedy this problem, other than turning your laptop sideways?  I made a first attempt at making a movie and blending together several bits of film from 3 songs.  It mostly is correctly oriented except right in the middle for a minute...

I didn't completely commit the set list to memory, but in case you're interested, he played:

We Might Fall
Right Now
Breathe
Last Train Home
Start a Fire
You and Me
Psycho Suicidal Girl
Back of Your Car

I was so sad I didn't get to hear one of my new favorites "Unbreak", but it was a great show and I had a blast and I'm so glad Lisa agreed to go with me!  So fun!

Eat Pray Love

This evening, Lisa and I went to see Eat Pray Love.  We had both recently read the book.  I thought it was pretty good.  It didn't stray too far from the book, but where it did, I was so thankful.  For example, I found the time in India that she spent in the Ashram to be incredibly boring in the book and they kind of jazzed that up in the movie.  Also the house search for Wayan in Bali was majorly shortened (thank God!).

If you liked the book, I bet you'd like the movie.  On another good note, the movie didn't make me crave Gelato like reading the book did!

Commercials I Love

I generally hate commercials and never watch them, but every now and again, some will come around that I LOVE.  Currently I'm loving the Zappos commercials.  Have you seen them?  They take actual calls and then have muppets act them out.  They are just so darn funny because you can't imagine calling and saying these things!  Here are my three favs:

This is probably the one I can relate to the most!

While I didn't get home until 8 p.m. tonight ( I had to go to Waco to the Children's Home), I'm so glad that it is Friday!!!  Have a great weekend!

Taking a Breather

Tonight was the last night of Summer School.  I gave an exam, so I was done early and have already posted all the grades!  So now I get to take a breather until 7 a.m. on August 23rd.  That's when Fall starts back.  I wish, oh how I wish, that they would start Summer School a week earlier so that we got a 2 week break between Summer II and Fall, but nobody asks me.

So in my week of leisure, I have several fun activities planned, so stay tuned for a little fun next week!

Now on to one of my favorite subjects...make-up!  I had totally convinced myself that I was not going to go  to Neimans for a Fall revamp of all my make-up for a few reasons:  (1) I own like every color of eye shadow that is made, (2) I still have tons of my green palette made by the Hasidic Jew from last Fall, and (3) my Fall splurge was on clothes...and a trip to New Orleans next month.

But I had been hearing this little palette from Urban Decay calling my name...

I kept thinking that it wasn't really that expensive in the scheme of things...only $44 after all.  But then while in Target last week, I ran across these...

Only $5 stinking dollars each!

I don't know why restraint came over me for the first time in my life, but it did, and I only bought the Smoky Eye Edition.  I'm thinking I need to go back and see if the others are still there.  They had a lip palette too, but I don't like lip stuff you HAVE to use a lip brush with, so it didn't really interest me, but if that is your thing, you may want to check that out too.  If you are interested, they weren't located with the ELF stuff at Target, but were on an end cap in the make-up section.  I also got a minty lip gloss (for $3) that makes me feel like I've just brushed my teeth every time I use it (even if I haven't).

Here is an up close look at the Smoky Eye set...
(sorry iphone photo because I'm being lazy)

I love the silvers!  I can't wait to try it all out.  I have the perfect occasion  for a smoky eye next week...

Starting Over...

Today is about starting over...I have a new fairy godmother.  I don't know how, but I think there is a little bit of magic involved.  I got the order processed at about 4:45 yesterday afternoon.  My fairy godmother came from Pennsylvania and she arrived before 10 a.m. today.  There was some FedEx priority overnight involved, but I still think maybe a little magic too.

I'm happy to report that I have my new FGM all up and running, and I am NOT having the dreaded issue that I had before that made me hate my 1st iphone 4 so darn much!  (I was face dialing in case you were wondering...hitting all sorts of buttons with my face when talking...a sensor issue they think).

Now I'm just being super careful until my Otterbox arrives.  Oh and my uncle told me about a third party warranty program that offers insurance for iphones, so I took that out immediately.  Afterall, my new FGM may be great, but she's still made out of GLASS!

Hopefully me and my new FGM on are a path towards a beautiful drama-free relationship!

Gratitude-aka: iphone disaster update

My heart is overflowing with gratitude for a guy named Jason who works at Apple.  I got through to Jason yesterday and after begging and pleading and generally sounding pathetic, he agreed to take my cause to the higher-ups.

Basically, he managed to get approval for them to do a phone swap...send me a brand new phone and I send back my shattered mess of a phone at no cost.  All of this was accomplished because I had been having an issue with my original phone and he argued that they were still working on the issue that I was having and they hadn't really determined that I didn't need to send the old one back for a replacement anyway, so they should just do a swap now.  He got approval at about 8ish last night, but the department that sends out new phones was closed, so he couldn't check to see if they have any in stock.

I just heard from him and they do have them in stock, so they are sending my new phone out today or tomorrow at the latest.  Jennifer's husband got a new iphone and wasn't stupid like I was, so he kept his old 3G instead of selling it on Craigslist.  So I got his activated today and am using it until my new fairy godmother comes in.

To answer some of the questions...

(1) Yes I had a case on it.  I actually had bought the case about 5 mintues before dropping it in the parking lot.  Problem is, most cases do nothing to protect the face of the phone.

(2) Yes, I know all about Otterboxes.  I have been resisting the otterbox because of it's size.  I tease my friend Suzanna who has an Otterbox on her 3GS and tell her that it is essentially a Hummer covering her phone.  Also they only come in black right now for the Iphone 4.  Black...blech!  I did just sit on hold for 15 minutes to ask the question of when colors are coming out.  I was told soon.  I went ahead and ordered the black and hope the colors come out soon and I can do a return of the black and a purchase of a color.  Best I can tell, the Otterbox Defender series is the only case that will protect against the screen shatter.  Oh and they are behind 10-14 days, so it will be that long before they ship out.

All I have to add to this is the following comment:  Is it really a good idea to make a phone out of glass?  Front and Back made of glass?  I mean, REALLY?  I never break phones and this one didn't last 2 months.  Yes, I have my hand issue that let to the dropping, but really, GLASS...

How's It Going?

How's it going you might ask.  It's a new week.  Are things looking up?  I think I'll answer that question with a picture...

Sometimes my left hand still doesn't really work.  I forget that sometimes it doesn't work.  I grabbed my phone with my left hand and it slipped right out and hit the pavement.  I'm waiting on a guy from Apple to call back with possible solutions...other than paying the $199 to get the face replaced (yes, that's what the phone cost me a little over a month ago).

Would you believe that it actually still works?  It does, but the Apple guy told me to not use it unless totally necessary, so if you are a person who calls me, call my house!

Blogiversary...a day late

Happy 2nd Blogiversary to Me!!
Well, actually yesterday was my 2nd Blogiversary.  I thought it was today, but then realized this morning that yesterday was in fact August 7th.  Oh well!

Welcome to my belated 2nd Blogiversary and 650th post!  Whether you are new follower or been around for the full 2 years, thanks for reading!

Now for the reveal of these...

According to my math, there were a total of 25 entries for the Tervis Tumblers, and per Random.org, my random number between 1 and 25 was....(dadadadadadadda)...#14!  Number 14 is Abby!

Funny enough, I just saw Abby last night at her sister's Encore Wedding Reception...

Congrats Abby and thanks to everyone for entering.  I hope to do more giveaways soon, so stay tuned!

P.S. Abby:  I know where you live and I know which tumblers you want, so I will get on placing the order ASAP!
