Pre-Spring Cleaning

When I was little, my uncle Mark lived in Houston.  Every summer I went to visit him with my family.  The crew always consisted of me, my grandmother, my great-grandmother, and my great-grandfather.  Sometimes my mom made the trip too.  We always piled into my great-grandfather's most recent version of the Ford Crown Victoria and  headed south.

I remember that I would get to do really fun things like go to the beach in Galveston (without sunscreen), and go to restaurants where I could order Shirley Temples.  I know those don't seem like big exciting things now, but you couldn't do either one in Nocona, Texas, so I was in high cotton.

Another thing I remember about these trips was that my grandmother and great-grandmother ALWAYS cleaned out my uncle's refrigerator.  I guess because he was a boy, and a bachelor at the time, and we all know that boys are just gross.  But your refrigerator gets gross if you are a girl too, which brings me to the point of this post...

I have been waiting 7 years and 5 months for some family member to show up and clean out my refrigerator and it hasn't happened yet.  So I've been cleaning it out over the last few days all by myself.

It started out on Sunday.  I decided I had no idea what kind of food I had in my freezer, so I took it all out and organized.  Turns out, I had a bunch of stuff that was severely out of date (2010!), so I threw away a bunch of stuff and reorganized.

Then today, I decided to tackle the refrigerator side.  Who knows why, probably because I had a gazillion other things to do and I'm a procrastinator of epic proportions.

I actually didn't intend to do the whole thing.  I was putting away some fruit I bought and was totally grossed out by my veggie/fruit drawer.

I got it all cleaned out and as Yolanda like as I could (real housewives reference for those of you thinking "who the heck is Yolanda?").

Then I decided to do the meat and cheese drawer too

At that point, I just new that I had to be all in and I clean off all of the shelves too.  I mean they were filthy and turns out they still had tape and stuff on them from when the thing was delivered back in 2005.
I think I was gone when it was delivered and my helpers just put stuff in thinking that I would surely get around to cleaning it out before 2013!

But  I got it all cleaned out.  Turns out there was a full trash bag of expired food in there too!

The end result...

Now I need to seriously go grocery shop & replace all the stuff I threw out!

P.S.  I have to confess that even though I used the proper term of refrigerator here in this post, I really call it an ice box, like I'm living in the 19th century or something.

Awards season wrap up

Yesterday was just a big awards day.  I watched the Independent Spirit Awards from Saturday.  I really love Independent films.  I usually don't make a "must see" list for the Independents, but always end up seeing a bunch of them anyway.  I was so happy that ISA gave lots of love to one of my favorite films of the year, Silver Linings Playbook

Of course, last night was all about watching and tweeting the Academy Awards.  Can someone please tell me how we ever watched these shows before twitter and texting was a part of our lives?  I honestly cannot remember!

I was pretty pleased with how the awards shook out last night. I was over the moon that Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook.   I enjoyed the performances of Adele and the cast of Les Mis, and I was beyond thrilled that Argo took home the Oscar for Best Film.

You know, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon gave one of my favorite acceptance speeches of all time.  Do you remember it?  So much joy.  So much exuberance.  Such baby faces!

Ben didn't disappoint this year either.  What a truly heartfelt speech.  Seriously, it brought me to tears (but thanks to texting, I know I wasn't alone in that!).

I honestly just love Jenn and Ben (you know I call them that like we are BFFs).  I think they are the cutest little family.

I thought Jennifer Lawrence looked gorgeous in Dior last night.  One of my fav dresses for sure.  Poor thing stumbled getting up the stairs, but that's one of the things that I've grown to love about J-Law this awards season.  She is so down-to-earth!

In other fashion news, I also loved Amy Adams dress.  I thought Jenn Garner had the best jewelry for that wowsa necklace she was wearing.

Did you watch?  What did you think?  Whose fashion did you love/hate?

That's Entertainment...

I was so happy when I woke up this morning and saw the calendar reminder pop-up on my iphone screen saying it was "Oscar day".  Of course I have it in my calendar... duh!  Today is my favorite entertainment day of the year!

But this post isn't all about the Oscars, it's about entertainment in general... TV, Music, Books, and Movies.  Four of my favorite things!

Television

So Downton Abbey is over.  It's a long long wait until January of next year, when season 4 will come back to us.  That's a lot of television void to fill.

I watch a lot of television.  Some of the shows I watch are ok.  Some I love.  You know how it is.  One of my "must watch immediately" shows is Scandal...

Have you watched it?  If you haven't, start from the beginning.  I think it would be a very hard show to pick up right in the middle.  I am so addicted, it's not even funny.

Another show that I have enjoyed this season is Nashville...
Look, nobody is as surprised as I am.  But it's oddly addicting!

I have started watching a new show on FX that started a couple of weeks ago called The Americans.  I'm not addicted to it yet, but it's very interesting.  It's set in the 1980's and is about Soviet spies who are living here in the U.S.

Next Sunday, a new show is premiering on ABC that I plan to check out.  It's called Red Widow.  Here's the trailer...

Originally, I had planned to watch the first episode because Anson Mount plays the husband (who obviously gets killed in the 1st episode).  I love Anson Mount, but I've told you about that when I wrote this past summer about my love of AMC's Hell on Wheels (which thankfully is  about to start filming season 3).  I digress.  Anyway, I discovered that Goran Visnjic (Dr. Luka Kovac for the ER fans out there) is going to be a star on this show, so I think I will give it a shot.

Music

I've update a list over on the right hand side of the blog that says what's on my playlist, but I'm currently enjoying:

The Lumineers (Ho Hey is more well known, but Stubborn Love is great too)

The Black Keys (I really like Lonely Boy, but love Little Black Submarines)

Bruno Mars (specifically Locked Out of Heaven.  I dare you to listen and not at least tap your foot!)

Books

If you are suffering from Downton Abbey withdrawals already, then read "The American Heiress" by Daisy Goodwin.  It's about an American girl with tons of money who goes to England to buy a title.  She marries into the aristocracy, and has some trials and tribulations.  Her name is even Cora.

Movies

I came very close to my goal. I saw all the movies on my "must see" list except for Lincoln.  I blame a few factors for my failure: (1) a three week sickness, (2) I've been very busy with work, and (3) Lincoln was pulled from the theaters closest to my house.  It comes out on video in March, so I plan to see it on my Apple TV asap.

My top three movies this year, along with my thoughts about them are...

I thought Silver Linings Playbook was so very good.  I've heard it said that it is kind of a downer because it's about mental illness, but I disagree because I think it has an uplifting ending, a silver lining if you will.  The cast was the best ensemble of the year in my opinion (obviously SAG didn't agree, but that's okay).  It may be my favorite movie of the year.

Argo was great too.  So suspenseful.  It has been the darling of this awards season and I can certainly can see why.  I'm so upset Ben Affleck didn't get nominated for Best Director for a couple of reason: (1) He deserves it.  Not just the nomination, but the award, and  (2) By failing to nominate him, I think it calls the Oscars into question.  I mean, when the Globes, SAG, BAFTA, Producer's Guild, and Directors Guild all choose to acknowledge him as the best, and the Oscars fail to even nominate him, what the heck?  It kind of makes a farce out of the whole thing, and I don't want that.  I take the whole award season very seriously!

Zero Dark Thirty was a great movie too.  It also had a great cast.  I know that everyone who sees it already knows the ending, but I kind of spoiled it for myself because I read Bergen's book "Man Hunt: The hunt for Osama bin Laden".  Instead of just knowing the ending, I knew ALL the details, so lots of shocking twists and turns to most of the audience, just weren't there for me.

Now for my "I want to win"  & "who I think will win" portion of this post:

Actor

Want:  I want Bradley Cooper, but I think that is just because I haven't seen Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln yet.

Will:  Daniel Day Lewis for Lincoln

Actress

Want:  Jennifer Lawrence.  It's a very close race in my opinion between J-Law and Jessica Chastain.  The reason I give it J-Law is because of the character.  I think it takes more to play a person dealing with issues like her character was.  She really sold it.  Jessica Chastain gave a great performance as a determined and ballsy CIA agent, but I just don't think she had to really dig deep and "go  there" to convince the audience she was her character like J-Law did.

Will:  Jennifer Lawrence (although I'm hearing lots of chatter about the old lady from Amour and she did win the BAFTA).

Supporting Actor

Want:  Robert De Niro for Silver Linings (again, maybe because I haven't seen Lincoln yet)

Will:  Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln (I've heard his performance almost stole the show)

Supporting Actress

Want:  I thought Anne Hathaway was great in les Mis, so probably her.  But I wouldn't be upset if Jackie Weaver from Silver Linings won.

Will:  Anne Hathaway

Director

Want:  Well, I freaking want Ben Affleck to win, but since that's not possible, I'll just go all in for Silver Linings Playbook and say David O. Russell

Will:  Steven Speilberg

Movie

Want: either Silver Linings or Argo. I'm really split on this one. My heart says Silver Linings, my head says Argo.  But I will go with Argo.  What breaks the tie?  Well if Argo wins, George Clooney and Ben Affleck will take the stage to accept the award.  'Nuff said.

Will: Argo

I guess we will see how well I did on my predictions tomorrow!  Check out those albums, television shows, and book if you are looking for a little extra entertainment in  your life.

Rude Awakening

I didn't exactly plan to get up at 4:30 a.m. today, but when my burglar alarm sounded, I was rudely and unpleasantly awakened.  The alarm system indicated a window breach, but I was never able to locate it.  Of course, I was convinced I was done for, but luckily, I think it was just a sensor gone bad.

Lola doesn't usually sleep with me, but early this morning, she was my protector.  She came to bed with me (not like I actually slept much after that).  Normally when we lay in bed, she hangs out at the end of the bed, but not this morning.  This morning she was glued to my side.  She's such a good girl!

This was my little guard dog this morning.

I have had a busy day.  I haven't had a chance to nap, but I think that's good.  I probably need to be good and sleepy tonight so I don't fret about the burglar who was thwarted last night and is coming back to get me alarm malfunctioning again.  I reduced my stress with a little retail therapy this afternoon.

Last year I wanted some crocheted Tom's but they sold out quickly.  I saw that this year they came in Navy, but my size was already gone several places, so when I located them at Nordstrom, I headed over and nabbed them.

I've been having holy heck with my hair.  Stupid Redken changed my shampoo and conditioner and the new stuff is complete junk.  My hair has been terrible!  So today, I grabbed this Fekkai and hope that it is the answer to my prayers!

I also grabbed another pack of Emi Jay holders.  I love mine, but tend to misplace them (and they do seem to stretch out after lots of wear).  They had these new neutrals, which will be great for blonde hair.
My spending stopped there, but I had to kill 15 minutes because Nordstrom's registers stopped working (seriously), so I wondered through the mall for a little window shopping.  I received a new Pottery Barn catalog yesterday and a couple of things caught my eye.  I wanted to check them out in person.

This bedding is called Jocelyn Floral and I thought it was so lovely.
Turns out, it's even better in person!

I also eyed these etched glass plates in the catalog.  They were great in person too.  You get a 4 pack (one of each color).

I also wondered down to Bath & Body Works.  I get so overwhelmed by their newfangled scents.  What happened to Raspberry, Vanilla, Apple, etc.  What the heck does Paris smell like?  Or Tahiti?  Or Pink Chiffon?  Seriously, get back to basics B&B Works!  But look at these flashy new plug-ins!  Kind of fab!  They have some other colors and  flowers online too.

So those were my Friday finds.  I hope you have a great weekend!  I hoping for a nice, peaceful, and drama free weekend (I didn't even tell you that yesterday there was a bomb threat at school AND I missed a major accident by 4 inches!), and I can't wait until Sunday for the Oscars!

Louis deux

Well, I have added to the purse collection.  Let me introduce you to the new one that I'm calling Louis deux...

It is the Neverfull Louis Vuitton.  This Louis isn't brand new.  It has a story...

A local attorney, Mary, had it and carried it for a couple of months as her work bag.  I would see it at the courthouse and think it was nice.  My own work bag was just about worn smooth out, but I couldn't find one that I liked (or could afford).

One day last spring or early summer, I noticed Mary wasn't carrying the Neverfull, but had a different Louis.  I noticed this becoming a pattern, so one day I asked her if she was interested in selling her Neverfull.  Unfortunately, she had already sold it to her hair guy.

Fast forward to yesterday, when Mary texted me and asked if I still was interested in the Neverfull.  Her hair guy had decided that it was just too girly and had only carried it twice, and now he wanted to sell it.  It was a great price, it's in great shape, and I just couldn't pass it up!

I feel like it was really just meant to be mine!

It's the large size tote, but it can be cinched up to become smaller...

I haven't decided if I'm going to use it as a work bag (I finally found a Kate Spade that works pretty well), or if it will just be a purse.

{Eight}

Yesterday, my sweet Lola turned 8!

Her celebration actually began on Friday when Jennifer brought her a present...

A new hedgehog!

Here is the birthday girl yesterday

She had several gifts to open
I really love that this pup poses on command!

First up...

It's a cupcake!
{at least a stuffed squeaky cupcake-the only kind she can have!}

Next up, a gift from her grandparents...

The final gift...

Lola with her birthday loot!

Valentine Treats

I decided to do little gift packs of S'mores for my friends this year.
I thought they turned out pretty cute

  They were yummy too!
(What?  I couldn't send them out without having a quality control taste test!)

The biggest problem was that I didn't contemplate that so many friends live out of town!
Not exactly easy mailing like a card, so I didn't get to give as many as I had planned in my mind.

Lola got a squeaky pig for her Valentine's Day present.
She always gets something super small for V-day because her birthday is in a couple of days.
She also got a new bone and another toy from my parents this past weekend.
Spoiled Puppy!

Hope y'all got some sweet treats for Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day

Because I've been on a West Wing watching kick recently (really, when am I not on a West Wing kick?), I give you a Toby Ziegler valentine...

Happy Valentine's Day!

P.S. Off to go give both of my classes exams.  I'm whatever the valentine's day equivalent to scrooge is!

Mardi Gras

I went to Mardi Gras this weekend!
No, I didn't get to go to New Orleans, but I ventured home to Nocona for their Mardi Gras celebration.  The town was all decked out and really in the spirit.

I took Lisa with me...
This past year, the football team was very good, so they got to lead off the parade.
This was one of my favorites...

Double decker and they were playing music
(we decided that all floats needed to be playing music.  that greatly made them more enjoyable)
I also really enjoyed the alligators with the bead baskets

Another double decker...

This one with an oil theme
The actual theme of the parade this year was suppose to be
celebrating the town's Native American heritage

We saw all these little cars lined up before the parade...
I loved this little one in her pink fur and pink car.
 The slug bug, mud bug...

Though I don't watch the show, I got the feeling this had something to do with "Duck Dynasty"

Our friends, the Henleys had their Fire Krewe out for the parade
They had confetti cannons, which I also greatly enjoyed.

Love that Steve and Trish had giant beads!
It's all about the beads!!!

I don't remember what I did for my 10th Birthday, but I know that I didn't get to have a Mardi Gras float to celebrate!
An Indian riding a bucking Armadillo...

because what parade would be complete without that?
 Our church even participated!
(and the only church in the parade at that)
There were several horses, but I thought this was the best dressed.

There was tons of good food.  For lunch on Saturday, we went over to Oklahoma to the Peach Orchard (my favorite hole-in-the-wall joint).

My Mom had made us these cupcakes...

They had a cajun dinner at the Fire Hall, but Lisa and I decided to drive over to Boyd (about an hour away) and go to a wonderful restaurant called Gogo Gumbo.  It was so good!  (Mom and Dad had to go to a wedding a couple of towns over).

Then this morning, Dad made us breakfast tacos.

Here's a photo of the breakfast taco cooking in progress...

It was a pretty good Mardi Gras weekend!
