October Plans

As I've said before, I love October.  It's a time of decorating, fall leaves, crisper air (hopefully), football, and lots of other activities.  I'm so excited that it's almost here.  I have been busy planning lots of activities for October, so I made a list...

(1) Canton Trade Days:  I love going to Canton.  You can buy just about anything you want there.  I try to go at least twice a year...once in the fall and once in the spring.  I'm not looking for anything specific, but i'm just loading up my shopping card and heading to East Texas.

(2) State Fair of Texas:  CORNY DOGS (obviously) are the highlight of this upcoming trip.  The petting zoo is also high on my State Fair list of activities I love.

(3) Autumn at the Arboretum:  Jennifer's 2nd grader has a week off in October for fall break.  He asked her what activities she had planned.  For the most part, we have a full calendar of court planned, but somehow, I don't think that was what he was thinking of.  We managed to find one day where we can take her munchkins to the Dallas Arboretum.  I think the kids are going to love it (they've never been before), and I always do too.

(4) Spa Day:  On a Saturday near my birthday, I have a spa day booked down at Neiman Marcus.  There is an event called Spa Week.  Different spas around the country participate for one week (kind of like restaurant week).  Each participating spa lists 3 services that they discount to $50 a treatment.  They only allow so many of the discounted appointments, so I was lucky when I got a back to back appointment for a 60 minute massage and a 60 minute facial.  I plan to get to the mall early, have a breakfast I love at Corner Bakery (Swiss Oatmeal), and then enjoy my spa day.  Happy B-day to me!

(5) Birthdays:  October is kind of birthday month!  Lots and lots of birthday.  Family, Friends, and Me!

(6) Take Lola's Halloween Pics:  I got Lola another great Halloween Costume, so after she is groomed in a couple of weeks, we will do a little photo shoot in her costume.  {Don't tell her about this or she will run away...she has already tried on her costume, and she is not amused... it has a wig!}

(7) Scare on the Square:  I'm excited because I love tagging along with my friends who have kids to Scare on the Square.  It is usually on Halloween, which is often too difficult to manage with actual trick-or-treating and such, but this year since Halloween is on Saturday night, Scare on the Square is on Friday, and thus, totally doable! Hooray!

New Glasses from Warby Parker

I heard about Warby Parker a couple of years ago from the source where I have found out about so much information and "favorite things" over the years...Ms. Oprah Winfrey.  Oprah is a big fan of Warby Parker eyeglasses.

I went to the eye doctor a couple of weeks ago and decided that I wanted some new glasses, so Warby Parker was my go-to place.  I was very excited to see that they had a store in Dallas.  They don't have stores in a ton of locations, but if they don't have one in your area, they have a neat little mail order program where you can pick out 5 frames, and they mail them to you to try.

The process of selecting frames was very quick for me.  I was probably in and out in about 15 minutes.  It was primarily because I loved almost every pair I tried.  It kind of made me wish I didn't wear contact lenses because I would have totally bought 4 pair!  Since I only wear glasses a couple of hours a day, I had to select just one. {they have an awesome sunglass selection too}

This was the one I decided to get.  I love the grey frame.

These were the runner-ups in my selection...

Loved the violet that runs through this frame.

This was just tons of fun.  Totally funky...

This was very different than the others, but a cute option too...

Besides having amazing frames to choose from, there is so much else to love about Warby Parker.  First, most glasses are $95.  That's for the frames and lenses.  Some frames (if they have metal) increase a bit in price, and some prescriptions will cost $30 more.  That's still a pretty good deal!  Second, they are a company with a conscious, and I love that.  Similar to Tom's, when you buy a pair of glasses, they give a pair of glasses to someone in need.

Even if you live near a store, you order your glasses and have them mailed to you.  They claimed it would take 7-14 business days to receive them, but I ordered mine on a Friday, and received them in the mail the next Thursday.

I love my new Warby Parkers!

{this is in no way a paid advertisement, I just love to share what I love}

Mindy Kaling Day

You know how people always talk about the five people they'd have as dinner guests if they could have anyone?  Well, I can tell you, for sure, that Mindy Kaling would be one of my five.  I love her.  She is smart.  She is funny.  She is stylish.  She would be the perfect dinner guest.

This week I'm celebrating Mindy Kaling Tuesday because it's a big day for Mindy lovers everywhere.  First, her much awaited second book is being released today.

Second, her show The Mindy Project is launching it's 4th season over on hulu.  Fox didn't pick it up, but smartly hulu did.  So I'll be getting a hulu subscription so I can watch the one show that makes me laugh the hardest.

It's not too late to get on board as a Mindy fan.  If you haven't watched The Mindy Project, seasons 1-3 are streaming on hulu (seasons 2 and 3 are better than 1, so stick with it).  If you haven't read Mindy's first book, I recommend it too.

Ready for October

I know we still in the first half of September, but October will be here before we know it.
October is definitely one of my favorite months!
When I was out shopping this weekend, I popped into TJ Maxx/Homegoods, and their Halloween game was on point y'all!  They had just about anything Halloween you could want, and even tons of things that you didn't even know you wanted.  If you have any Halloween needs (and sadly, I do not), head out to your TJ Maxx/Marshalls/Homegoods.  They seem to be ready to roll into October.

As I said, I don't need another Halloween thing, BUT since I've never met a tree that I didn't think could use more ornaments, ornaments are always a purchase I can rationalize buying.  And since I'm an eccentric nut who has a Halloween tree...
these Radio Shiny Brites were calling my name!

If you have a keen eye, you might have noticed that my Halloween tree from last year already had some Shiny Brite ornaments, but not THESE Shiny Brites....
These are super cool.  The black design is actually a textured, with a velvety feel.  I have some similar for Christmas, but am super excited to see these on my tree.
Is it too early to start decorating for Halloween?!?

One for the (royal) record books

Today, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II breaks her great-great grandmother Victoria's record as the longest reigning Monarch...

QEII has now been Queen for 63 years, 217 days, and you know I cannot resist celebrating along with the royal celebrations!

I just think this is so amazing, especially in light of the way she became the monarch.  This is a story of twists and turns, that if you read it and didn't know better, you would think it fiction.  Princess Elizabeth was born 3rd in line to the throne.  Her grandfather, George V was King.  Her uncle Edward was the heir, and her father Albert, the spare.  Her uncle took the throne after her grandfather died, then ultimately decided to abdicate, which led to her father becoming King George VI, and her being heir to the throne.  When her father passed away in 1952, she became Queen at the age of 25.  25!!!  Can you even imagine?

I love the quote from a speech she gave in 1947... "I declare to you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great Imperial family to which we all belong."

Just to share, what I count as my own "too good to believe" story...

I grew up loving all things England, and all things Royal Family.  So when I got the chance to go to London and study in the summer in 1996, I thought I had died and gone to the heaven.  Then one day I went out to Dover Castle, and who did I get to see?  None other than the Queen Mother!
And then, the next year, I went back to London with my Meme.  I was being a good tour guide and we went to Buckingham Palace on our first day there, but without planning it, we wondered up on the opening of Parliament.  There was tons of pageantry...horses, guards, marching bands, and yes, we got to see Her Majesty, The Queen!
God Save the Queen!

A Kitchen Mini-Update

While I would like to make some substantive changes to my kitchen (backsplash, counter tops, floors), I do not currently have the budget for such changes.  Over the past year, I made some small changes to the kitchen that were a little more budget friendly, but still give a little update to the room.

I bought these chairs from Craigslist about a year ago.  I didn't get around to painting them until January.  Then I recovered them in this peacock blue velvet.
I also did away with the yellow painted walls, and just painted them cream.  This is not my dream color for the walls, but in working with backspash color, etc., it works.  Also, it is the same color as the lower part of the walls (below the chair rail) in my dining room, so it's a nice tie in.  The color is from Benjamin Moore and it's called Mayonnaise.

I also got some new art for the space.

I got this pear print with a mirrored frame at Canton Trade Days
I ordered this print's image from an Etsy vendor, took the image to Kinkos to be printed out, and then framed it at Hobby Lobby.  This would have been a very inexpensive project, if I had bought a frame that was reasonably priced.  I did not.  I fell in love with the most expensive frame in the stupid store (I'm not sure that is correct, but it was not a good value to say the least).  Anyway, I love it, and I love how it turned out.

I also got a new light fixture for over the breakfast table.
I found this fixture at Paul Michael Company in Canton.
It was priced great at $99.
But they had a mother's day special... buy a $100 gift card for $75.  There was no restriction on the card, so I purchased a card for $75, and then immediately purchased my light fixture.  So it was a steal at $75!

I'm happy with my mini-remodel!

Booties for Fall

Do you ever just get a bee in your bonnet and decide that you cannot live without a certain fashion item?  I sure do.  Friday night, the bee in my bonnet was black suede booties.  Why on earth I decided that I couldn't live the weekend without some black suede booties, I have no idea.  I mean, it's not like the temps are even cool enough to wear something like that in Texas for another couple of months, but I decided I couldn't live without them, and went on an internet search.  I had earned a DSW rewards certificate, plus they sent out another coupon for this labor day weekend, so I looked there first.  I located several pair at my local store, in my size (which is a miracle), and headed out on Saturday morning to try and locate this item I couldn't live without.

I tried on several pair, and here are some of them...

This was the pair I went with my eye on.  It's by Adrienne Vittadini and is called "Truman".

Here it is in grey, which is very pretty too.  You can see the detail better.  I really liked the cut outs.

This is another Adrienne Vittadini that I liked.  It is called "Thomas".  I found it hard to get on and off, and that would probably translate into me not wearing them very much, so I passed.  But they were really cute.

This pair is a Me Too brand.  The shoe is called "Devon".  The sales lady tried to convince me they weren't dressy enough because there is a suede button there on the side, and I guess she succeeded because I passed on them, but looking back, I think she is wrong.  They were VERY comfy, so I may regret not getting them.

There were several other pair I like a lot in the store, that I'm not seeing online, and in fact the pair I ended up with aren't online either.  They are by Anne Klein.  They were a little more comfy than the A.V. Truman with the cute cut-outs, and they were $30 cheaper, so I went with them...

I have a plan for this fall/winter season to revamp my work wardrobe by changing up the accessories. I'll wear the same dresses I have, but instead of jacket all the time, I'll go with the long cardigan, and pair it with tights and booties instead of normal dress pumps.  In my mind, I'll look cute :-)
